It began with a text message that said, " I am in the ER. You don't need to come." Earlier that day my beloved got dressed in his suit and tie, took the train to work and after a few hours feeling lousy went home. Upon undressing he noticed his foot and leg were hot, swollen and red. The memory of trimming a callous on the bottom of his foot crept back as he realized he must have an infection. My dearest, not having a doctor or not seeing a doctor in at least ten years goes to a CVS Minute Clinic for help. They take one good long look at him and send him to the ER.
I arrive to find him on a stretcher with an IV and his foot exposed. There is a giant sore, an ulcer on his right foot. Two interns are poking at it calling it a Diabetic ulcer. Then the news that his A1C was 13.9!! My love had a terrible case of Diabetes and what we would learn next would make it all worse.
When we met he had bird legs, very skinny with little muscle on them. He had told me that he had recently lost 100 lbs through diet and exercise. I never saw him as overly thirsty or craving sweets. I only noticed how tired he often was. There were many canceled dates because he was just too tired to go out after work. I did also notice that his feet were kind of misshapen and hammered up. When I saw them at the beach out of their socks I have to admit I was kind of repulsed. He was so sweet, and so into me, BUT THOSE FEET!
Shortly after this hospital stay, which oddly enough was almost exactly two years ago, we learned so much more about his health and about each other. My beloved had been sick for some time. Probably years. There was so much damage from not taking care of himself. There is no way he could have been feeling well at all. I think that it is easy to become accustomed to feeling just okay.
Having untreated high blood sugar for so long caused the clawing of my husbands feet. This means his toes are all hammered. The nails were think and yellow. He also walks on the balls of his feet and they are permanently misshapen. He has neuropathy in his feet and legs. He also has retinal damage that required laser treatments. Finally one complication that has been the most hard for us to deal with is his ED.
This is how we got here. Two years later the ulcer has waxed and waned. Yet it is unhealed and requiring surgery to correct the shape of his foot so it no longer causes an ulcer to form. Today will reveal to us what kind of surgery he needs and how long it will take to recover. I am anxiously away
Today my dearest is having another doctors appointment to find out what kind of surgery he needs to deal with his ulcer and recent cellulitis. We are praying for good news.
